🔴 General strike inside Minya Al-Layman prison: around 180 political detainees are staging a hunger strike in protest against abuses and harassment
Al-Shehab Human Rights Center has received reports of approximately 180 political detainees inside Minya Al-Layman Prison entering an open-ended hunger strike, in protest against the worsening pressure and systematic abuses committed against them. There are growing expectations that the number of participants in the strike will expand in the coming days
📌 Details of the abuses and direct officials:
Systematic abuses and direct mistreatment: the prison administration, represented by the prison director, Ahmed El-Khouly, and the head of investigations, Mustafa Abdel-Hakim, faces allegations of carrying out severe and ongoing violations against detainees
Verbal and physical assaults: the head of investigations is accused of deliberately directing verbal and physical assaults that violate human dignity against those held in custody, without any legal justification; this has led to a sharp escalation of tension inside the prison’s cell blocks
Imminent health risks: the center warns of the serious health repercussions of continuing the strike, especially given the presence of elderly detainees and those with chronic illnesses among the strikers
⚖️ The strikers’ demands and Al-Shehab Center:
Stop assaults and abuses: immediate cessation of all forms of verbal and physical assaults and security violations against detainees
Improve living conditions and fundamental rights: improve detention conditions, allow the right to regular and sufficient exercise, and improve the circumstances of family visits and communication with families
Medical care and access to files: immediately enable detainees to exercise the right to necessary treatment and medical care, and to obtain full access to their medical files
Open an independent investigation: the Public Prosecution and the relevant authorities are urged to open an urgent, independent judicial investigation into the complaints and allegations reported regarding assaults and to hold those responsible accountable
