Al‑Shehab Human Rights Center received initial information indicating a tragic incident involving the death of one of the detainees who was ill with diabetes, inside the accused’s dock while his trial was being heard before the Alexandria Governorate’s Misdemeanours Court (Appeals) (محكمة جنح مستأنف المنتزه). The death occurred as a result of the court’s judges and the court guards preventing him from meeting his basic health needs

📌 Details of the incident and inhumane treatment:

Refusal to meet health needs: The deceased detainee, who suffered from diabetes, requested that he be allowed to urinate due to the nature of his chronic illness. However, his request was met with a firm refusal, and he was ordered to remain detained inside the courtroom dock

Acute deterioration leading to death: The humiliating treatment and obstinacy caused his health condition to deteriorate rapidly inside the dock until he later died

Violation of human dignity: The incident highlights a complete disregard for standards of humane treatment for patients and detainees, and the transformation of court proceedings into a means of abuse and deprivation of even the most basic human rights

⚖️ Al‑Shehab Center’s demands:

Open an urgent independent investigation: The Public Prosecution is urged to open a transparent judicial investigation to determine the circumstances of the incident inside the court and to identify criminal and administrative responsibility

Accountability for those responsible: Referring the court guards and anyone proven to have been involved in refusing to ensure the deceased’s health rights for trial, and holding them accountable to prevent impunity

Respect detainees’ and patients’ rights: Strict commitment to the constitutional and legal guarantees that ensure elderly detainees and patients are treated in a manner that preserves their dignity and safeguards their safety

A call for documentation: The Center calls on anyone who has documented information or details that confirm the identity of the deceased to contact the Center via its email in order to help complete the Legal documentation and to contact his family
