🔴 Urgent appeal | Risk of permanent blindness threatens detainee “Ahmed Ismail Moussa” at Abu Zaabal 2 prison due to medical negligence

Al-Shehab Human Rights Center is following with deep concern the urgent appeal launched by the family of detainee “Ahmed Ismail Moussa” (53 years old – from Minya Governorate) who is held at Abu Zaabal 2 Prison (Political Wing “A”) in connection with Case No. 670 of 2022; where he faces the danger of permanent blindness as a result of obstinacy and systematic delays in carrying out an urgent surgical procedure to treat retinal detachment

📌 Details of the stalling and deterioration of the medical situation:

Repeated postponement of the operation: the detainee is transferred to the hospital again and again after the scheduled clinic appointments have ended; this has led to the cancellation of his urgent surgery several times and has seriously worsened his condition

Announcing a hunger strike: the detainee informed his family of his intention to launch an open-ended hunger strike in protest against the prison administration’s delays in treating him and depriving him of his right to healthcare

Collective medical negligence: this appeal coincides with the presence of other medical cases that have suffered severe complications inside the prison; such as detainee Ahmed Hamed Abdel Wahab, and detainee Mohamed Ibrahim Shtewi, whose health condition deteriorated to the point that one of his feet was amputated, in addition to reports of the death of one of the detainees recently

⚖️ Al-Shehab Center’s demands:

Immediate surgical intervention: transfer detainee Ahmed Ismail Moussa immediately to a specialized hospital and perform surgery to treat retinal detachment to save his eyesight before it is too late

Full medical care: provide the necessary treatment and health services for all sick detainees inside Abu Zaabal 2 Prison without delay or procrastination

Investigation and accountability: launch an urgent investigation by the Public Prosecution into acts of negligence and deliberate medical neglect that have put detainees’ lives and health at risk, and hold those responsible accountable
