For more than 12 years… Continued disappearance of Palestinian youth Shadi Ahmed Mohamed Al-Zahhar after entering Egyptian territory in 2014 from Gaza
Al-Shehab Human Rights Center monitors the continued disappearance of Palestinian youth Shadi Ahmed Mohamed Al-Zahhar, born in the Gaza Strip on 27 August 1995. His whereabouts have been unknown since 6 September 2014, after he entered Egyptian territory coming from the Gaza Strip, with no disclosure to date of his location or fate.
According to his family’s statement, Shadi entered Egypt in September 2014, when he was 19 years old. However, news of him has been cut off since that date. His family has been unable to obtain any information that reveals his location or the circumstances surrounding his disappearance, despite the passage of more than 12 years.
His family continues to suffer ongoing humanitarian and psychological distress due to the uncertainty surrounding his fate, amid fears for his life and safety. This is in light of his continued absence for many years without any information that would allow them to feel reassured about him or to know whether he is still alive.
Al-Shehab Human Rights Center expresses its deep concern regarding the continued disappearance of Palestinian youth Shadi Ahmed Mohamed Al-Zahhar within Egyptian territory. It emphasizes that the right to know one’s fate and to be protected from enforced disappearance is guaranteed for all persons, regardless of nationality. It also stresses that the continued lack of information about his fate requires a serious and urgent investigation.
The Center calls on the Public Prosecutor and the relevant Egyptian authorities to immediately disclose his whereabouts and fate, and to conduct a serious and independent investigation into the circumstances of his disappearance after entering Egyptian territory. It also urges coordination with the competent Palestinian authorities to trace his fate, ensure his safety, and enable his family to know the truth and feel reassured about him.
The Center also reiterates the necessity of ending the suffering of families of the missing and disappeared, ensuring their right to know the fate of their loved ones, and not leaving them for years waiting for answers about them.
