🔴 Renewal of detention of “Motasaddaqsh” journalists for 15 more days… Continued arbitrary detention in inhumane conditions

Al-Shehab Human Rights Center expresses its deep concern over the decision of the Office of the Supreme State Security Prosecution to renew the detention of six journalists from the “Motasaddaqsh” platform for an additional 15 days. The decision was issued during a hearing held via video link from their place of detention in Badr Prison, without their personal presence or any new investigations, according to what the platform announced.

📌 Details of violations and detention conditions:

Show hearings without investigations: the detention is being renewed automatically, in the absence of any new investigations or genuine guarantees of a fair trial—turning pretrial detention into an extended punishment without any legal justification.

Severe restrictions inside the detention facility: the journalists complain of arbitrary violations, including being prevented from communicating with other detainees and being deprived of even their most basic rights, such as bringing in books and winter clothing.

Simultaneous targeting of journalism: this arbitrary decision comes in the wake of extremely serious developments affecting journalistic work in Egypt, including systematic restrictions on independent media institutions and their journalists.

⚖️ Al-Shehab Center’s demands:

Immediate release: release the six journalists from the “Motasaddaqsh” platform immediately unless there is a legitimate legal basis for continuing their detention, and respect fair trial guarantees.

Stop the expansion of pretrial detention: put an end to the use of automatic renewals without sufficient legal grounds, and ensure detainees’ right to defend themselves.

Improve detention conditions: enable the journalists to communicate with their families and their lawyers, allow the administration to permit the entry of books and winter clothing, and provide detention conditions that preserve their human dignity.

Protect freedom of the press: respect freedom of opinion and expression, and stop repressive practices that restrict journalistic work and punish media professionals for carrying out their work.
