🔴 Escalation and continuation of a hunger strike by 28 detainees inside Badr 3 Prison… Stripping of cells, assault on a detainee, and transfer to solitary confinement amid the ongoing hunger strike
The detainees continue to block surveillance cameras and carry out a hunger strike for the sixth day in protest against harassment, medical neglect, and the prevention of classes and exams.
The Al-Shehab Center for Human Rights monitors a new escalation inside Badr 3 Prison, following a prison administration search campaign led by the head of investigations, Ahmed Zaher. The campaign resulted in the stripping of a number of cells and the transfer of one detainee to solitary confinement rooms, after an altercation with one of the officers during the search, amid reports that he was assaulted by beating.
According to the information received, the detainees met the search campaign by knocking on the doors of the cells and chanting in protest at the prison administration’s practices. Meanwhile, some cells set fire to their blankets, in a step that reflects the increasing state of tension inside the prison.
The information also indicates that a number of detainees have threatened to commit suicide if conditions do not improve, in light of the escalation of complaints related to restrictions on visits and outdoor exercise, medical neglect, and preventing detainees from continuing their studies and taking their exams.
The information further points to the continuation of retaliatory practices against those whom the prison administration describes as leaders of protest actions, amid growing fears that punitive measures will be taken against detainees who participated in the protest movements.
In the same context, the detainees continue to block surveillance cameras, alongside the continued hunger strike by a number of them for the sixth day in a row, in protest against detention conditions and in a demand to improve their living and human conditions, and to stop the harassment and violations they are subjected to.
⚖️ The Al-Shehab Center for Human Rights emphasizes the necessity of:
▪️ Immediate cessation of any physical assaults or retaliatory measures against detainees.
▪️ Revealing the fate of the detainee who was taken to solitary confinement, verifying his physical safety, and ensuring that he is not subjected to torture or ill-treatment.
▪️ Providing the necessary medical care for detainees, and responding immediately to hunger strike cases, in a manner that safeguards the right to life and physical integrity.
▪️ Stopping restrictions on visits and outdoor exercise, and enabling detainees to continue their studies and take their exams.
▪️ Conducting a serious and independent investigation into the reported incidents, and ensuring respect for detainees’ rights and their human dignity.
The center warns of the danger of continued escalation inside the prison, in light of the ongoing hunger strike and threats that signal the worsening of conditions. It calls on the relevant authorities to intervene urgently to contain the crisis, stop the violations, and ensure humane detention conditions consistent with legal standards and human rights.
