🔴 Death of a detainee inside the Tenth of Ramadan Prison amid allegations of torture and complete medical neglect

The Al-Shehab Human Rights Center received, with deep sorrow and rejection, news of the death of the detainee “Mohamed Fahmy Mohamed Sharaf El-Din” (37 years old – Shubra El-Nakhla, Belbeis, Sharqia) inside the Tenth of Ramadan Prison. He was serving a custodial sentence with “negative” freedom restrictions, and only one year remained of it. The death occurred amid explicit allegations from his family that he was assaulted and denied medical treatment.

📌 Details of the incident and human-rights concerns:

Torture and deliberate medical neglect: He suffered an episode of acute diabetes-induced unconsciousness inside his cell, which led to his collapse and a fracture of his nose. According to repeated and consistent testimonies, he was neglected and not transferred to a hospital for two full days, without any emergency care.

Contradictory timing of death and suppression: The body of the deceased was handed over on 11 August 2026, with indications that he was held inside the prison after his death and before he was admitted to the hospital. This raises suspicions about the concealment of the actual time of death.

Violation of international instruments: Denial of urgent medical treatment and physical assault constitute a blatant violation of the right to life (Article 6 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights) and a breach of the “Nelson Mandela Rules.”

⚖️ Demands of the Al-Shehab Center:

Opening a neutral judicial investigation: Calling on the Public Prosecutor to open an urgent investigation into the suspicion of enforced killing and torture.

Forensic description: Appointing a neutral, legitimate medical committee to determine the direct cause of death and its precise timing.

Accountability for those responsible: Determining criminal and administrative responsibility for the management of the Tenth of Ramadan Prison and the medical staff at the facility.

Enabling the family: Ensuring the deceased’s family’s right to full access to medical reports and investigations in order to achieve justice.
