A wave of anger inside prisons… violations against detainees and their families escalate

Al-Shehab Human Rights Center is closely following, with deep concern, the escalation of violations targeting detainees and their families, in light of the continued security and judicial practices that undermine constitutional and legal guarantees, and further intensify the suffering of thousands of families.

📌 Key violations documented:

▪️ Arbitrary raids and seizures: In recent days, raids were carried out on the homes of a number of detainees in the governorates of Sharqia, Dakahlia, and Giza. These raids included searching the homes and seizing sums of money and private property, which sparked a state of heightened tension among families.

▪️ Undermining the guarantees of a fair trial: The Second Circuit continues to intimidate the consideration of a number of cases through procedures carried out in the absence of the defendants. This includes reading out committal orders, hearing witnesses, and examining seized items, depriving them of their right to attend their trials and defend themselves.

▪️ Seizing the right to defense: The restrictions imposed on detainees’ ability to communicate with their lawyers continue, limiting the defense’s capacity to carry out its duties and to review the conditions of their clients.

Al-Shehab Human Rights Center affirms that these practices constitute a violation of the guarantees of a fair trial guaranteed by the Egyptian constitution and international instruments—foremost among them the defendant’s right to be present, to communicate with their lawyer, and to protect families from arbitrary procedures.

The Center calls for:

▪️ Ensuring that detainees attend all procedures and hearings.

▪️ Lifting restrictions on direct communication between detainees and their lawyers.

▪️ Full compliance with fair trial standards.

▪️ Opening an independent investigation into the violations and holding those responsible accountable.
