🔴 Motherhood behind bars.. 4 years of pretrial detention and abuse of Ms. “Nisiba Atiya”

Al-Shehab Human Rights Center continues to follow with deep concern the ongoing detention of Ms. “Nisiba Mustafa Muhammad Atiya,” who has completed four full years in pretrial detention since her arrest in May 2022, amid total deprivation of care for her only child.

📌 Family breakdown and deliberate medical neglect:

Deprivation of the child of parents: The arrest of Nisiba—coinciding with her husband’s imprisonment for years—has left their only child displaced and deprived of parental care, representing a human tragedy and a forced dismantling of the family.

Deteriorating health condition: Nisiba suffers from several illnesses and her condition requires urgent surgical intervention to clear her arteries, in addition to an acute inflammation of the nerves, stomach infection, and colitis, amid ongoing medical neglect.

Violations inside detention: Nisiba is held in harsh and inhumane conditions, where she was placed with criminal detainees, which compounds her psychological and physical suffering and violates the minimum standards for the treatment of detainees.

⚖️ Al-Shehab Center’s demands:

The Center stresses that the abuse of mothers and depriving children of family care constitutes a crime that violates laws and international conventions, and it calls on the authorities to:

Immediately release Nisiba Atiya or replace her pretrial detention with any alternative legal measure.

Enable her to receive urgent treatment and perform the necessary surgery to save her health condition.

Take into account her child’s right to family care and reunite him with his mother to end his psychological suffering.

Open an independent investigation into the conditions of her detention and the violations she has been subjected to.
