Between Unjust Rulings and Ongoing Crackdowns: Violations Continue to Pursue Sheikh Abd al-Hafiz al-Muslimi in His Detention
🔴 13 years of abuses behind bars.. Continued arbitrary detention of the imam of Fath Mosque, Sheikh Abd al-Hafiz al-Muslimi
The Al-Shihab Center for Human Rights is following with deep concern the continued detention of Sheikh “Abd al-Hafiz al-Muslimi” (72 years old), the senior imam at the Ministry of Endowments and the former imam of Fath Mosque, who has been held since August 2013 in Liman Minya Prison, amid a prolonged series of legal violations and harsh conditions.
📌 A preaching career erased by intimidation and medical neglect:
Religious and social standing: The Sheikh was known for his independent religious and charitable activities; he represented Egypt in official delegations abroad, and established projects to arrange marriages for young people and host Iftar tables, without any political affiliation.
Systematic arbitrary procedures: During the years of his detention, the Sheikh was subjected to a series of violations including ill-treatment, restrictions on family visits, and preventing the entry of his personal and medical needs, in addition to detention conditions that do not adequately match his advanced age.
Ongoing deterioration of health: Sheikh al-Muslimi suffers from chronic respiratory diseases and repeated episodes of fainting, in the context of being deprived of specialized medical care and regular follow-up inside his place of detention.
⚖️ Demands of the Al-Shihab Center:
The Center stresses that continuing to persecute elderly detainees and depriving them of their basic rights violates the Constitution and the United Nations rules (the Nelson Mandela Rules), and it calls for:
Opening an independent and transparent investigation into all violations and restrictions reported to have been suffered by the Sheikh throughout the years of his imprisonment, and holding those responsible to account.
Immediate health release in view of his advanced age and the deterioration of his health condition.
Fully enabling him to exercise his right to regular family visits and to bring in his medical requirements without arbitrary restrictions.
