⚫ The death of political detainee Hisham Maki inside his prison cell at Wadi al-Natrun

The Al-Shehab Human Rights Center expresses its deep concern and condemnation regarding the death of political detainee Hisham Maki on December 31, 2025, inside his prison cell at Wadi al-Natrun, following a deterioration in his health due to the harsh detention conditions he faced.

According to available information, Hisham Maki was transferred to Shabin al-Kom Hospital after his health deteriorated, but he passed away there before his body was handed over to his family for burial.

Hisham Maki had been sentenced to life imprisonment and suffered throughout his years of detention from poor detention conditions and repeated transfers between different sections and places of detention, in circumstances that severely affected his health, ultimately leading to his death.

The Al-Shehab Human Rights Center confirms that this incident is part of a recurring pattern of neglect and mistreatment within places of detention, representing a serious violation of the right to life and health care.

The center calls on the Public Prosecutor to take urgent action, to open a serious investigation into the circumstances of the death, and to hold accountable those responsible for the practices committed by police officers inside places of detention.
