Rabaa: 12 Years Since the Massacre and the Perpetrators Go Unpunished
The twelfth anniversary of the Rabaa al-Adawiya massacre, which took place on August 14, 2013, is upon us. During more than 12 hours, the army and police forces committed a crime against humanity by killing, injuring, and arresting thousands of peaceful protesters, resulting in the deaths of nearly a thousand people, including 29 children and 22 women, while around a thousand others were arrested.
Despite documentation of the crime by local and international organizations, none of the perpetrators have been held accountable. Instead, hundreds of the protesters were tried in unfair trials that ended with sentences of death, life imprisonment, and incarceration.
Since then, the regime continues to kill and arrest opponents outside the framework of the law, violating rights and freedoms, amid a subservient judiciary that entrenches repression, representing a blatant violation of international law.
On this anniversary, we reaffirm our commitment to reminding the world of the victims and detainees, and we strive to bring their case before international courts to hold accountable all those who have committed crimes against them.
