Pediatrician Dies in Custody Due to Medical Negligence

news Saturday 9 August 2025

🔴 Death of a pediatrician in custody due to medical negligence

Dr. Atef Mahmoud Zaghloul (52 years old) – a pediatrician – died in his detention at Abu Kabir Police Station in Sharqia, after his health condition deteriorated severely and he was deprived of medical care despite suffering from chronic heart diseases and having previously undergone stent implantation.

He was held in pretrial detention on a politically motivated case, and his condition gradually worsened without any response to his requests for treatment or consideration for his release, until he was transferred to Abu Kabir Central Hospital two days ago, where he passed away this morning.

The Al-Shehab Center for Human Rights holds the Ministry of Interior and the police station management fully responsible for his death, and demands an urgent and independent investigation, accountability for those responsible, and improvement of healthcare conditions for detainees.
