The First Criminal Court in Rome issued a judicial ruling sentencing three Egyptian security officials in absentia to 10 years in prison, after convicting them in the case of the kidnapping and disappearance of the Italian researcher “Giulio Regeni,” who was abducted in Cairo in 2016 before his body was found, bearing severe physical torture marks.

📌 Details of the ruling and judicial responsibility:

Conviction in the ruling: The sentence of 10 years was handed down to each of the following officers and officials: Ather Kamal Muhammad Ibrahim, Hossam Hegazy, and Magdy Ibrahim Abd al-‘Al Sharif. Meanwhile, Tariq Saber was acquitted of the charge of kidnapping, and Magdy Sharif was acquitted of the charges related to injuries and killing.

Mandatory compensation: The court ordered the three convicted individuals to pay financial compensation to Regeni’s family and to the Italian Council of Ministers, through provisional payments that are enforceable and amount to 650,000 euros.

Confirming the crime of enforced disappearance and torture: The ruling reiterates the facts of the abduction of a Cambridge University student on 25 January 2016, followed by the discovery of his body on 3 February 2016, filled with signs of torture.

Breaking impunity: The ruling represents a decisive step toward establishing the principle of international accountability for perpetrators of enforced disappearance and torture crimes, and affirming that statutes of limitations do not apply to violations.
