🔴 The detention of the pediatric cardiac surgery consultant “Dr. Hassan Miftah” for 6 months amid complete ambiguity regarding his legal status

The Al-Shehab Human Rights Center expresses its profound concern over the continued detention of Dr. Hassan Miftah (a professor of pediatric cardiac surgery at Ain Shams University) for more than six months, in the complete absence of any clear or announced information regarding the reasons for his detention or his legal status.

📌 A medical figure and a human journey behind bars:

35 years of experience: Dr. Hassan Miftah is among Egypt’s leading pediatric cardiac surgeons; he spent decades performing precise surgeries for children, in addition to training medical cadres and participating in the Egyptian fellowship examinations.

Service to those unable to afford: He was known for his profound commitment to treating children from low-income families and covering the costs of their precise surgical procedures, choosing to remain in Egypt to serve his children despite receiving offers to emigrate abroad.

Absence of any political activity: All sources close to him indicate that his career has been free of any political activity, raising genuine questions about the motives behind his detention and his removal from within the bounds of the law.

Violation of the right to liberty: His continued detention without the announcement of any real criminal charges and without clear justification constitutes a breach of the constitutional guarantees of personal liberty and security.

⚖️ Al-Shehab Center’s demands:

Urgent disclosure of legal status: The authorities must immediately reveal his whereabouts and the charges attributed to him, if any.

Enabling communication: Allow his family and his lawyer to visit him and communicate with him to ensure his safety and health.

Immediate release: Release him immediately without restriction or condition unless he is being held on the basis of a real and publicly announced criminal accusation.

Stop harassment: Prevent security agencies from using detention as a tool to harass people outside the framework of the law and commit to judicial guarantees.
