Years of Solitary Confinement and “Rotation”: Medical Neglect and Abuses Target Dr. Safwat Abdel Ghani Behind Bars

🔴 12 years of abuse and “rotation”... the ordeal of “rotation” and solitary confinement targets Dr. Safwat Abdel Ghani

Al-Shehab Human Rights Center is closely following, with deep concern, the continued arbitrary detention of Dr. “Safwat Abdel Ghani” (63 years old), a leading figure in the Islamic Group, who has been held since July 2014, amid harsh detention conditions and a systematic “rotation” policy designed to keep him behind bars.

📌 Key abuses and suffering behind bars:

The “rotation” scaffold of continuous renewal: despite the issuance of multiple judicial decisions ordering his release throughout the 12 years, the authorities refuse to release him and deliberately re-cycle him on the basis of successive new cases in order to keep him in pretrial detention.

Isolation and critical medical neglect: Dr. Safwat is facing a severe deterioration in his health due to chronic illnesses, including (diabetes, high blood pressure, rheumatoid arthritis, and a slipped disc), amid deprivation of medication and prolonged solitary confinement.

Denial and family punishment: the prison administration prevents him from receiving visits and from regular family contact, and insists on denying him the chance to meet his son, who is also detained with him inside the prisons.

Scientific insistence despite restrictions: he was arrested in his youth and dismissed from his university, yet he continued his education in prison until he obtained his doctorate in 2007 in “Pluralism and the Circulation of Power.”

⚖️ Al-Shehab Center’s demands:

Immediate release of Dr. Safwat Abdel Ghani, given the length of his detention, his age, and his health condition.

Immediate halt to the “rotation” policy and prolonged solitary confinement against him and against all detainees.

Full permission for visits, enabling him to receive specialized medical care, and allowing communication with his family and his son.
