The Al-Shehab Human Rights Center expresses its deep concern regarding the entry of dozens of political prisoners in the New Valley Prison, known as the "Prison of Death," into an open hunger strike for the third consecutive day, in protest against the deteriorating living conditions, the continued cruel and inhumane treatment, and the prison administration and national security officer's failure to fulfill repeated promises to transfer them to prisons closer to their place of residence.
The hunger strike comes in the wake of an attempted suicide by detainee Mustafa Ali due to the severe violations faced by prisoners, an incident that reflects the extent of oppression and psychological pressure they are subjected to inside the prison.
The center confirms that the prison's remote location, situated in the heart of the Western Desert, imposes significant humanitarian and financial burdens on the families of the detainees, as their relatives travel distances exceeding 1500 kilometers round trip via dangerous desert roads, for a visit that lasts no more than ten minutes. This has led many families to cease visits, depriving children of seeing their loved ones, in a blatant violation of the right to family communication.
It is worth mentioning that official promises were made during the months of November and December to resolve this humanitarian issue and transfer the detainees; however, these commitments have not been fulfilled, and violations have continued, exacerbating the suffering.
The Al-Shehab Human Rights Center demands:
Immediate intervention to stop the violations inside the New Valley Prison
Transfer of all detainees to prisons closer to their place of residence
Ensure their human dignity and their legal rights guaranteed by the constitution and law
