🔴 More than twelve years since the imprisonment of young Anas Al-Beltagi... and the violations continue
His mother says in a heartbreaking message:
“My son has been unjustly imprisoned for 12 years…
I have not seen him, nor have I heard his voice, and I do not know what he looks like now.
He was just nineteen when they took him, and today he has surpassed thirty-two and is still behind walls that do not open… even the door of his cell has rusted from being closed for so long.
How long will the innocent be wronged? How long will mothers be devastated?”
Anas, the son of former parliamentarian Dr. Mohamed Al-Beltagi, was first arrested on December 24, 2013, while visiting his father at Tora prison complex. During that time, both he and his mother were subjected to beating and humiliation, before he was re-arrested at the end of the same month and forcibly disappeared for weeks.
Since then:
He has been subjected to enforced disappearance
torture
solitary confinement in harsh cells without ventilation, light, or medicine
total deprivation of visits and communication with family or a lawyer
Anas is punished solely because of family ties, without any conviction in any real case, while harsh sentences have been issued against him on political grounds.
In June 2024, Anas went on a hunger strike in protest against his detention conditions, and the response was:
solitary confinement for three consecutive months
during which his physical and mental health deteriorated severely.
The authorities did not only ignore his suffering but also doubled the punishments and isolation… Whenever he demanded his right to humane treatment, he was stripped of the most basic rights of life.
Anas's case is not an isolated incident but a reflection of a vengeful approach that has expanded to include sons, mothers, and wives… as happened with the Al-Beltagi family and others.
The continued detention of Anas represents a blatant violation of the right to freedom and personal security, and a clear breach of the international covenants that the Egyptian state has committed to.
Al-Shehab Human Rights Center
demands an immediate cessation of violations against Anas Al-Beltagi,
enabling him to communicate with his family and lawyer,
and opening an investigation into all the violations he has faced since his arrest.
