🟥 Serious deterioration in the condition of the detainee Walid Al-Zindahi after being forcibly transferred to the notorious New Valley Prison
The Egyptian Network for Human Rights is deeply concerned about the transfer of political detainee Walid Ahmed Ragab Al-Zindahi (49 years old), sentenced to life imprisonment, from the high-security Minya Prison to the New Valley Prison, in a move that represents a harsh punishment for him and his family, as the family will be forced to travel hundreds of kilometers on a tiring and costly journey for a visit that lasts only a few minutes.
Al-Zindahi suffers from chronic rectal bleeding and a deteriorating health condition despite undergoing surgery last year; however, his condition has worsened in prison due to deliberate medical neglect and deprivation of necessary treatment and care.
Information confirms that the New Valley Prison hospital lacks the most basic standards of healthcare, putting his life at real risk.
The mother, who is over eighty years old, sick, and unable to move, has not been able to see him for years. With his transfer to a more distant prison, visiting has become nearly impossible, leaving the mother to live in hope of seeing him even once… a hope that diminishes with the passing days.
🔻 Background of the case
Walid was arrested from his home in Giza on May 4, 2015.
He was subjected to enforced disappearance for 11 days inside the National Security, where he was tortured to extract confessions.
He was transferred between several prisons and faced what is known as the "welcome party" of beating, humiliation, and stripping of clothes upon his arrival at Minya Prison.
In 2020, the life sentence against him was upheld.
The continued detention of Walid under these circumstances, and the denial of treatment, represents a clear violation of the Egyptian constitution and the Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners (Mandela Rules), and puts his life in danger.
The Egyptian Network for Human Rights demands:
- The immediate transfer of Walid Al-Zindahi to a specialized hospital for treatment.
- The end of the policy of forced exile and his return to a prison close to his family.
- An investigation into the violations he has faced and accountability for those responsible.
