🔴 Medical neglect and severe suffering faced by detainee Marwa Arafa inside her prison
During a visit from her mother, Dr. Wafaa, on August 16, 2025, Marwa appeared in a state of severe illness, unable to walk on her own and struggling to breathe, leaving her mother in shock at her deteriorating condition due to ongoing medical neglect.
When asked, Marwa recounted that on August 13, 2025, she experienced a sudden health deterioration, after which she collapsed and lost consciousness. She was transferred to the central hospital where her condition was initially diagnosed as a pulmonary embolism. After further examinations, it was revealed that she had a clot with a severe drop in hemoglobin levels, a high fever, and numbness in the upper part of her body.
She was hospitalized for only one night, then returned to her cell where her fellow inmates were left to care for her, with an oxygen tube and some medications. However, the oxygen ran out quickly, leading to a further deterioration in her condition, in addition to the absence of appropriate medical care.
📍 We at Al-Shehab Human Rights Center hold the Egyptian authorities fully responsible for Marwa's life and safety, and we call on the international community and human rights organizations to intervene urgently to save her, as she has spent nearly six years in pretrial detention, deprived of her daughter who was just a year and a half old at the time of her arrest.
Have not those lost years been enough?
Is it not time to lift the injustice from her?
