🔴 Concern over the possibility of the deportation of an Egyptian student from Malaysia to Egypt despite the risks
The Al-Shehab Human Rights Center expresses its deep concern regarding the detention of the young Egyptian Marwan Mohamed Magdy Othman Ahmed, a university student residing in Malaysia, following his peaceful protest writings on the walls of the Egyptian embassy in Kuala Lumpur, calling for the opening of the Rafah crossing and support for besieged Gaza.
Despite the peaceful nature of his action, the Egyptian embassy considered his act a threat to national security and filed an official complaint against him, accusing him of "high treason," according to what was reported by the Malaysian police.
🔻 Malaysian authorities are currently holding student Marwan amid legal proceedings that are feared to end with his deportation to Egypt, in clear violation of the principle of non-refoulement, especially given the well-known record of the Egyptian authorities regarding serious violations against opponents, including torture, enforced disappearance, and unfair trials.
- The Al-Shehab Center demands that the Malaysian authorities immediately halt any deportation procedures for the student and holds them fully responsible for his safety in the event of his handover, reminding them of Malaysia's international obligations to respect human rights and not to engage in the extradition of individuals to countries where they may face persecution or torture.
