Mahmoud Tawfiq, an Alexandrian resident who was detained by Egyptian authorities on June 26, 2023, at his apartment, died while being forcibly disappeared amid accusations that he had been tortured and murdered.
After assaulting them, along with Mahmoud's wife, and tossing the furniture and belongings of their apartment from the ninth floor, the security forces had taken Mahmoud and his son into custody. The prosecutor ignored pleas to reveal Mahmoud Tawfiq's location in custody following his disappearance until his family received the unexpected news of his death.
The Ministry of Interior violated multiple laws by killing Mahmoud Tawfiq, including the following:
First, the subject and his family were arbitrarily detained and mistreated.
Second: An offense against his private property
Third: Forcible disappearance
Fourth: deliberate murder
The Al-Shehab Center for Human Rights demands an investigation into this murder case, holds the Ministry of Interior and National Security accountable, declares extrajudicial executions to be crimes against humanity, and asserts that there is no statute of limitations on such crimes.
