New Valley Prison
Egypt’s Silent Detention Fortress
Situated in the heart of Al-Kharga city in the New Valley Governorate, this prison lies 630 kilometers from Cairo, serving as one of the country’s most isolated detention facilities.
The prison contains 216 cells, divided across 12 wards—11 of which are designated for political prisoners, while the remaining ward houses criminal offenders. Each cell is no larger than 6 by 4 meters, designed to confine rather than accommodate.
The windows, measuring a mere 40 by 60 centimeters, barely allow the entry of sunlight or fresh air, creating an environment of suffocating isolation. Inside each cell, a cramped, unenclosed toilet measuring 1 by 1 meter offers little privacy.
Inhumane overcrowding defines daily life, with 20 to 25 detainees packed into every cell, enduring conditions that epitomize neglect and oppression.
